Black is one of the two foundation colors, the other being chestnut. Ponies are either black or chestnut with other genes modifying them. Black is dominant to chestnut. Most blacks do not look true black due to sunbleaching, which is called fading black. Some blacks hardly ever fade no matter the elements, and are called non fading blacks. A homozygous black has two copies of the black gene and will only produce black and bay based ponies.
