Sooty, also known as smutty, is a darkening modifier that can occur on any color. It darkens whatever color the pony is with scattered black hairs. Ponies can be only lightly sooty or so dark that they look a different color. How sooty is inherited is not known at this time.

Dorsal stripes, called countershading, and leg barring not caused by dun is a result of sooty.
